This broken seashell (possibly a gulf drill shell) was found along the beaches of Galveston, Texas during a family vacation.  Only 2.75 inches in actual size, I decided to paint an enormous realistic version.  I must say, I am pleased with the results and can't wait to find more broken shells on an upcoming trip to the beach.

I recently returned from a trip to Galveston (4 hours away) with precious cargo: 20 pounds of live blue crabs! The entire weekend was spent picking, then feasting, then picking, then feasting, etc. I must say, the efforts (and sore fingers) were worth every morsel!

This is a special oyster shell for an obvious reason:  the smooth inner shell (also known as the Mother of Pearl or nacre) is mostly purple.  Nature is full of surprises.  One just needs to pay attention....

Sand Dollar

With temperatures already in the upper 90s in Central Texas, my thoughts turn to the sights, sounds, tastes, and smells of the beach.  Oh, to feel the sand between my toes!  

New Canvas - The Addition of White

Obviously, I paint for a living.  Unfortunately, some paintings don't find homes as soon as they become available.  Thus, I must "store" them on the walls of my home until they rotate into a gallery or are purchased online.  

In the previous post, my canvas consisted of a variety of blues.  Since this painting may need to reside in my green family room (over the couch) for awhile, I decided to tone down the vibrancy of the colors.  Splashes of white were added (see above) and will be blended in the next step (and the next post).  'Til tomorrow....

New Canvas - Paint!

I didn't procrastinate long.  I had leftover blue paints from my recent oyster on the half shell, so I put them to use.  I'm still working out a design in my head, but this is a start.  (Note:  Today's "helper" is Molly.)

My daughter is studying German as a freshman in high school.  Last night, she put one of her cowboy boots (yes, we live in Texas) by the fire for Sankt Nikolaus--announced that December 6th is St. Nicholas Day--and wondered (aloud--several times) if  it would be filled with goodies overnight.  Of course, I studied German for 6 years and was  prepared.  Sankt Nikolaus filled that boot with  treats, sweets AND a new package of dental floss!  What a guy....

This Ford Edsel is based on a photograph that a high school friend posted on Facebook during a cross-country trip with his family.  I, of course, requested permission to use his pic.  Not bad for my first painting of a car!

We've all seen them:  paintings that look like they were made by a gorilla that sell for record amounts of money in the art world.  After a particularly frustrating day (and seeing some of those astronomical purchase prices via a fellow artist's Facebook post), I temporarily regressed back to the simpler days of childhood.  Using leftover paint on my palette and my trusty middle finger, I created this seascape fingerpainting.  Enjoy.

We had three baby chicks in my backyard.  As long as they were hens, my neighbors were "on board" with this arrangement (they ARE legal in my town). Imagine my shock when I went outside to visit with them (the chicks, not the neighbors) and one started crowing at me!  (I admit, as he grew, he was starting to look a little different....)  

Clearly, eggs are not in his future. Needless to say, he now resides on a farm in La Grange.  This little painting pays homage to that little cock....  :)

I'm dreaming of the beach again.  We weren't able to go to the coast this summer and I'm suffering from withdrawal symptoms as a result.  This little sand dollar (from one I found near the surf in Galveston) certainly helps ease the suffering!

I adore skeleton keys and have a collection of them that are still in use at our old farmhouse.  Each door requires a different key, causing a bit of confusion!  Anyway, while painting this, I thought a splotch of color was needed.  I've always enjoyed the phrase, "key to my heart."  Hence, a small Valentine's Day candy fit the requirement.
