It's the weekend--time ease into the day with the sights, sounds, and aroma of bacon sizzling in the black cast iron skillet, eggs gently frying in a melted dollop of butter on the next burner, and bread in the toaster turning a golden brown.  Just add orange juice (sorry, I still don't like coffee), a newspaper, and fluffy slippers--the perfect start to the day!

Fresh eggs from backyard chickens have spoiled me.  Their color, texture, and flavor are incomparable to store-bought cartons of questionable origin and ethics.  In honor of those hardworking hens, I have immortalized  one of their incredible gifts for my breakfast plate.

Eggs must be my "comfort food." Though I've painted them numerous times (and am usually pleased with the results), I've labeled this as "number 1" because it is the first yolk I've done as a daily OIL painting.

Free at Last

This painting, also on exhibit at the Georgetown Public Library through September, is quite dramatic, especially with the size of the piece. I really love the contrast with the background and subject; plus, the color combinations are gorgeous. I even included a slight reflection of the egg yolk in the whites which, I think, adds more dimension.

I spent too much time on this one. A daily painting should be quick and precise (unless you are "into" impressionism). After six hours and numerous changes, I finally settled on this (and it looks impressionistic). I call it "Release" due to the fact that I was finally "released" from the personal chains that bound me as I struggled with this one, then finally shouted, "No more!"

The Illustrious Chicken

I forgot to add this photo to the previous post (I'm still learning). These were some of our chickens at the farm during 2007. The white one in the upper middle is "Ruffles Puffles Muffles Cuffles." (Can you guess who named her?) She liked to climb onto our porch (with her friends) and sit in a cushioned chair to lay her eggs. The egg in my first daily painting was one of hers (and was later incorporated into a chocolate chip cookie dough batter).

This 6x6 daily painting was my first EVER (completed in 2007). At that time, I wasn't very "daily," liked this immensely, and hung it in my kitchen for my personal enjoyment. I did two more (#2 and #3) which were sold to private collectors. NFS
