The tree is finally decorated and a chill is in the Texas air! These vintage ornaments originally adorned my parents' Christmas trees over the years. Many broke and are just memories in photo albums. A few survived, though--including these silver and red balls. They now have places of honor in my home (and are carefully stored after the holiday season!).

This little painting attempts to depict the excitement of a romantic evening with someone special.  A single, perfect red rose deserves a kiss, right?  And how many of us have put on a luscious layer of lipstick, only to realize that blotting it on a tissue might be in everyone's best interest?  (No one wants to have a red clown mouth after that special moment!!!)  So, in anticipation of a memorable night, I present the ageless "Date Night."

Here it is--my first stone crab claw painting.  Being an East Coast girl, I am used to eating Maryland blue crabs from the Chesapeake Bay.  In fact, I can pick crabs with the best of them.  Stone crabs, though, are not Maryland blues.  Only the claw meat is eaten--assuming you can get to it.... 

 

We are not talking about gently hammering at the claw with a wooden mallet or using a lobster/crab/nut cracker device.  NOOOOOOOOOOOO.  They have to be whacked with the blunt end of a cleaver--which can be disturbing to the uninitiated. Half the time, claw manages to slip from my grip and land on the floor.  The rest of the time, I end up pulverizing the meat with shattered shell shards.

 

Let's just say, it is easier to paint a stone crab claw than to eat it.  Instead of singing the blues, I'll just eat them instead.

Another delicacy from the sea....  These are difficult to obtain here in Central Texas.  I occassionally spend big bucks to buy a bag from our monopolizing grocery store in Georgetown; unfortunately, there is always a death rate of 50% or higher.  Those odds aren't worth the cost. Let's not even discuss the frozen options!  Thus, I must live with my memories of the East Coast and the shells I saved from shellfish feasts gone bye....

While unpacking my fall decor, I came across this little painting I did in 2009.  I named it "Witchhikers" in a playful attempt to showcase the candy corn "hiking" on my daughter's Halloween witch hat.

Alas, it is time to find a new home for this piece to make room for new art.  I'm selling this on eBay at a sale price.   (Please note:  The white dots are a result of my shoddy photography work--I will reshoot, if anyone is interested....)

Recently, I spent a week in Galveston. Envision this: A small beachfront cottage on the western edge of the island. Few tourists (other than my family of three and two small fluffy pooches). A deck that runs the length of the cottage, parallel to the beach. Large windows overlooking the Gulf. Easy access to the sand and surf. A balmy breeze. The beginnings of a magnificent sandcastle started on the afternoon we arrived. Rain. Yes, rain. Lots of it. On day #2. For the duration of the trip.
The ground was saturated. The sandcastle "melted." The fluffsters were drenched. The aroma of "wet dog" mingled with the salty sea air. Eight of the nine bottles of sunblock we packed remain unopened.
This sand dollar evokes dreams of a sunny beach vacation. Next year....

First, I will need to rephotograph this painting again. The oils were still quite wet; hence, there are some glossy spots that look like white paint. Regardless, I love California rolls--especially with lots of wasabi. If I don't cry, then I haven't used enough!

Sometimes I crave Chinese take-out! Recently, while gorging myself on chicken fried rice, I was mesmorized by the box. These waxy works of "art" were originally used as oyster pails! Oysters were shucked by pros, then packed into these containers for transport home by housewives. Who knew?

Hello, there! I've been a busy bee this last week and have neglected to post. Sorry! Here is the ivory soap painting in progress. I still need to touch up the cloth, tiles, and soapdish before adding bubbles and bling. I'm also working on a large 20x20 oyster and lemon painting (complete with cocktail sauce!!!). I'll post a photo of that piece--in progress--tomorrow.
